After working with the UnCommon Farms Financial Solutions team for over 15 years now, MBS Family Farms has been able to see the benefits that the Historical Performance Analysis (HPA) and accurate financial data can have on a business. With the HPA tool, MBS can look back 5 and even up to 20 years in the past at financial performance. “Farming is playing a long game. With the HPA we can look back and see what has been successful and what financial mistakes we are making to be able to fix them for the future,” Said Kyle Mehmen, Owner and General Manager of MBS Family Farms.
For the Mehmen family, they feel as though succession planning started on day one for them when they started working with UnCommon Farms. The first step for them was creating a business plan and an organizational chat to be able line out who was responsible for the various areas of the business. From there, over time, the family has transitioned the operation and now they are already looking at what succession planning needs to look like for the next generation. “I think some people think that you have to have a big sit down and figure out everything all at once,” said Kyle, “really it happens over time as you work on your long-range planning for your farm."
