Director, Tax Services and Planning

We are seeking an experienced Director of Tax Services and Planning with a strong background in the agriculture industry. This results-driven leader will oversee the tax team at UnCommon Farms and work directly with farmers nationwide. Responsibilities include tax preparation, planning, payroll tax preparation, filing, and general tax maintenance, with the goal of advancing UnCommon Farms' clients from mid-sized to large, sophisticated operations.

What you will do:

  • Management of all Tax Service and Planning functions and staff members both in Brighton and remote, which includes mentoring, training and development of existing and new staff members.
  • Participate in the development of ongoing business plans for the Tax Service and Planning group.
  • Research and advise leadership of recommendations for services offerings, fees, and the tools and technologies needed for services.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with tenured clients to increase both retention and revenue.
  • Actively develop new business relationships with potential clients, especially members to foster ongoing efforts to obtain additional opportunities for the organization to expand revenue.
  • Responsible for development and monitoring of assigned budgets, including revenue, profit, expense, and labor.
  • Responsible for managing group’s billables, receivables, and collections.
  • Research and recommend staffing for functional areas to ensure proper coverage through both peaks and low volume windows.
  • Monitor and participate in advisory and planning services for key, complex and/or large clients.
  • Make recommendations to improve processes that will increase service quality and efficiency and responsiveness to clients. Includes monitoring of billable and non-billable hours and work tasks.
  • Delegates to staff as appropriate, yet maintains sufficient client contact to ensure clients are satisfied with processes and progress of services provided.
  • Proactively anticipates and resolves escalated client issues quickly.
  • Interact directly with clients to provide innovative tax planning, consulting, and compliance expertise.
  • Review the preparation of S-Corp, C-Corp, Partnership, and high net worth individuals’ federal and state income tax filing (including any necessary corrected and amended returns).
  • Ensures accurate and timely preparation of tax returns to comply with legal requirements, including keeping detailed financial records and navigating complex tax regulations.
  • Research tax issues, review legislative developments and act accordingly to adhere to all federal and state mandates.
  • Complies with and enforces company policies and procedures.
  • Provide content and support for client presentations, seminars, and training programs.
  • Assist in the development of marketing materials that are used to educate both current and future clients.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in client facing tax services and planning; with 10 tax seasons of hands-on experience; and 3-5 tax seasons as area manager with direct reports.
  • Active CPA or IRS Enrolled Agent.

· Bachelor’s degree required in Accounting/Finance with a master’s degree preferred.

· Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and tax preparation software (i.e., Ultra Tax, CCH, Onvio Form Management).

  • Expert understanding of complex financial concepts beyond the tax arena.
  • Experience with financial and tax planning for family held businesses with active business entities.
  • Experience with agriculture and a general understanding of farm business operations strongly preferred.
  • Verifiable experience leading skilled team of professionals both face-to-face and remotely.
  • Motivated to be an advisor to a variety of clients with varying skill levels.
  • Experience preparing and presenting and/or training staff and clients.
  • Experience with estate tax and succession planning is preferred.

Executive Assistant to the CEO

We are hiring a full-time Executive Assistant to the CEO. This dynamic role demands a high-performing go-getter with a “get it done” attitude and requires an administrative professional with a strong background in executive support. The ideal candidate will anticipate needs, think critically, and offer solutions to problems with a high level of discretion, professionalism, and confidentiality. This position offers a hybrid work arrangement, including working up to two days per week at our Brighton, IL headquarters.

What you will do:

· Use analytical skills to assist in spending forecasts, expense tracking, and budget analysis by working closely with the CEO and finance team, identifying cost-saving opportunities, and ensuring financial goals are met.

· Coordinate communication between the CEO and board members, external stakeholders, and internal leaders, ensuring timely responses and follow-ups.

· Prepare regular reports for the CEO on project status, key milestones, and performance metrics.

· Create strategy document drafts, documenting amendments and changes to the strategy.

· Liaise with internal and external executives on various projects and tasks.

· Understand the CEO's goals and priorities to align tasks accordingly.

· Prepare materials for board meetings, including agendas, presentations, and reports.

· Manage the CEO’s calendar, schedule appointments, and coordinate meetings.

· Prepare reports, presentations, and other documents as needed.

· Coordinate board and external guests travel, accommodations, and meals.

· Coordinate all staff meetings and communications as well as all executive meetings on and off-site.

· Coordinate any off-site board and external stakeholder functions as directed.

· Handle correspondence, emails, and phone calls on behalf of the CEO.

· Organize and maintain files, records, and documents.

· Prioritize trust, integrity, and ethical conduct.

· Uphold the integrity and reputation of the CEO and the organization.

Requirements:

· Bachelor’s degree or administrative professional certification is required.

· Minimum 5+ years’ experience in an administrative role directly reporting to a senior executive or team.

· Experience overseeing budgets and expenses, preferred.

· Experience developing internal processes and filing systems, preferred.

· Experience working with a Board of Directors is required.

· Excellent computer skills/usage, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).

· Familiarity with agriculture is a plus.

· Some travel may be expected for meetings, conferences, board and executive activities.
